Thanks for visiting my webpage! John here. I am a graduate student in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta, supervised by Dr. Marianne Huijsmans, as well as a research assistant in the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University. I study the Cherokee language (Iroquoian: Oklahoma, North Carolina) and speak a little Spanish (Romance: Spain) and Russian (Slavic: Russia). My theoretical interest is in formal semantics, including modality, associated motion, and clausal coordination. My primary applied interests are language reclamation—revitalization and critical pedagogy, but I am also interested in constructed language studies, aesthetics, and art ethics.

Previously, I have pursued post-baccalaureate study in linguistics at Columbia University and have earned an MA in classical language pedagogy and a BA in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. In the past, I have worked in historical pragmatics, generative (Latin) metrics, and ancient language pedagogy. I hold a Texas State EC–12 teaching certificate for Classical Latin; my practice is informed by the Culturally Responsive Teaching framework.
